The female golf world includes such names as Annika Sorenstam, Babe Didrikson Zaharias and Nancy Lopez.
It now includes Wilbraham & Monson Academy.
For the first time in school history, WMA has created a Girls' Golf team, with six females from four countries playing the 2017 season.
"This is the first year we've had enough girls to have the girls have all-girls matches," Varsity Golf Coach Doug Hutcheson said. "And we also have a number of coed matches the girls are able to participate in. Coach (Kevin) Kane has been great with the girls this year and he's doing a lot to promote girls' golf. We hope the numbers will continue to grow going forward."
The team will play girls-only matches May 3 and 10.
"Going into the season we hoped to have enough for a girls' team," Coach Kane said. "To have that group gives them an identity of their own. As opposed to being an add-on, they can believe they have a girls' program.
"It's also nice because at certain practices we can have the girls separate from the boys and we can have them work on things that are specifically challenging to them. It's been nice for them to be created as a group, and I look forward to having more girls, once they know we've created a team, come join us."
The new team is comprised of Molly Bell '17, Kiana Smith '17, Elizaveta Biryukova '19, Muwei "Katherine" Xu '20, Ziyi "Cecelia" Chen '19 and Mai "Mia" Nguyen '18.
For Molly, the team is particularly special because it wasn't too long ago she was the only female on an otherwise all-boys' team.
"Having an all-girls' team is meaningful to me because I started out as the only girl on the team," Molly explained. "I was very nervous. Not only were they boys, but they were seniors and I was a sophomore. Now, having all girls, for me, as a captain, it's important I make them feel not the way I felt.
"We have a lot of fun. Mr. Kane, being a golf coach and a golf coach of girls before, is something helpful. One big thing for me is I want it to be fun and not stressful. The Boys' Varsity is a lot more competitive and I want the girls to be comfortable and having fun at the same time. At a match, when people mess up it's usually because they are nervous and anxious about that's going to happen."
