Some of the biggest brands and names in the social media world will be heading to Florida in May.

Facebook, Instagram, YouTube ... and Wilbraham & Monson Academy's Mariel Picknelly '20.

Mariel will be representing Musical.ly at the sixth annual Playlist Live, which will be held in Orlando May 5-7.

To be clear, this isn't a show or gathering exclusively for teenagers. The event includes the giants of the social media, which makes Mariel's invitation and eventual participation all the more impressive.

"Every social media platform goes to this event," Mariel said. "Instagram will be there, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Periscope and all the social media apps will be there showing their newest technology and bringing representatives of the company there. It's a huge convention."

Musical.ly is a free app that focuses on short videos and live broadcasts. It was launched in 2014 and already has millions of users from throughout the globe.

Mariel has been, among other things, hosting broadcasts on Musical.ly. A segment of her live performances have included what she calls the Human Jukebox, where she has sung A cappella by request on the spot.

"It's something I made up," Mariel said. "The Human Jukebox is when kids comment on songs they want me to sing, and I sing a few seconds. It's really fun and they really like it. I shout the kids' names out.

"I'm going to be doing my 15-minute set (in Orlando), and then between other people, performing sets doing the Human Jukebox and interacting with kids."

Mariel, who has accumulated 111,000 followers on social media and seven million likes for her Musical.ly broadcasts, will also be doing some emceeing at Playlist Live.
