A few months after earning her way into the Wilbraham & Monson Academy record books for girls' basketball, Kayla Mokwuah '18 made school history in spring track.
Kayla set the school record in the shot put, posting a throw of 33 feet, 4.5 inches in a meet at Cheshire Academy April 15.
"I wanted to get it because I want to throw as far as I can every meet," Kayla said. "I thought I would break it this year, based on my PR, but I still have to work towards it. I haven't thrown for a full year, and after a while you lose a lot of what you have."
Kayla led WMA Girls' Basketball to the #3 seed in the New England Class C Tournament in the winter, and also recorded her 1,000th career point. She set the shot put mark in the second meet of the season.
"It's always good early in the season to have someone break a school record," Coach Tom Iannacone said. "Usually, that's indications of coming into the season in shape, also with the expectation that you will continue to break the school record. It's always good to start out that way. We started out with a big win against Cheshire and Kayla's throw helped us do that and we'll hope for more in the future."
Kayla started throwing the shot put when she entered high school, following the lead of her older sister.
"My sister is a Division I shot put thrower. She will be going to Holy Cross next year," Kayla explained. "We've always done the same sport, so when she decided to do shot put her sophomore year, I decided to do it freshman year. She helped me through it and I like throwing with her.
"It's been a lot of hard work through the years. I know I can throw farther than I did so this will hopefully be a foundation for what the rest of the season will be. I hope I can PR again. I hope I can accomplish 38 feet this year."
