In sports, there are wins and there are big wins.
Beating a team for the first time in 30 years? Yup, that's a big win.
The Wilbraham & Monson Academy Boys' Lacrosse team got goals from six players and the Titans' defense was tough all game as WMA stunned host Pomfret School 8-6 April 12.
"It's good for the boys and the school to get a win like that," Coach Mike MacDonald said. "Confidence-wise, right now, we're through the roof. I'll pop those balloons at practice, but it was great on the bus ride home to see the boys smiling and enjoying the game."
WMA last beat Pomfret in 1987.
As well as the team played in the game, Coach MacDonald said the Titans actually won the game through their efforts at practice.
"Monday's practice was absolutely incredible," Coach MacDonald explained. "They came with a good energy. The seniors did a great job leading, which led into everyone doing their part, which followed into Tuesday, which was all prep for Pomfret. We looked at matchups, tendencies, offense and defense. The guys were laser focused and took ownership of their responsibilities."
Coach MacDonald also applauded the team's composure, which was put to the test when Pomfret rallied from two goals down to knot the game 5-5 in the fourth quarter.
"We kept our composure at all times," Coach MacDonald. "We did a great job. It was the seniors. We were tied in the fourth quarter and they knew we just had to go out and get the next goal. It was great to see as a coach and I'm proud of our senior leadership."
Zach Mann '17 and Jay Fournier '18 both scored twice for the Titans, and Jack Pagano '18, Pat O'Connor '19, Nick Thorn-Guillaro '19 and Jackson Whitlock '19 also found the back of the net. Zach contributed four assists as well. Goalie John Wright '18 stopped 13 shots, and the team's defense did a great job executing their slides and communicating.
