For most swimmers of all ages, setting school records comes at the end of the season.

Apparently, Wenjun "Happy" Chang '18 isn't like most swimmers.

In the first meet of Wilbraham & Monson Academy's season, Happy established a record in the 100-yard butterfly, beating his previous school mark by .34 seconds at the Kingswood Oxford Invitational at Trinity College Dec. 3.

Happy swam a time of 54.77 seconds, topping the mark of 55.11 he swam at the New England Championships in March.

"It feels pretty good," Happy said. "I also broke it in the fall season for club and I did it again. I was intending to go for the school record. I feel good but I think I still have many places to improve."

Happy finished the 2015-16 season very strong, and his off-season work with the Pioneer Valley Aquatic Avengers has him in position to be a powerful swimmer in New England this winter.

"He had a really good race," Coach Dan Moran said. "He took it out hard. One thing I would say that's impressed me is how much he improved his underwater ability from last year to now. It's really become a weapon. And he died off a little at the end so there are faster times to come."
