Wilbraham & Monson Academy's Field Hockey team played like the young and inexperienced team that it is in a scrimmage prior to the start of the regular season.
The official opener, though, was totally different, especially in the second half as the Titans competed with composure and carried the play to beat host Miss Porter's 1-0 Sept. 19.
"The girls did a stronger job this game than in our scrimmage last week," Coach Liz Fontaine said. "The girls were sending their teammates long passes, and each individual did their own job on the field. The girls respected their teammates and trusted them to make good decisions, and that showed."
Sydney Liptak '16, who played a strong 60 minutes at center back, scored the game's only goal, firing a penalty stroke into the upper-right corner with less than four minutes to play.
"My technique is to look one way and go the other, and thankfully that worked," Sydney said.
"We're ecstatic with the win. This win gives us confidence to move forward and win more games."
Along with Sydney, Claire Thomas '20 and Alex Garrison '18 played very well on defense to help WMA to the shutout. Goalie Megan Wells '16 made eight saves.
