Very few people can make breaking records look routine.
Wilbraham & Monson Academy swimmer Ania Axas '19 is one of those few.
Ania bettered two of her WMA pool records in a home meet against Cheshire Academy Jan. 12.
In the 50 freestyle, Ania lowered her pool mark from 25.02 seconds to 25 flat. Ania cut off more than a second in the 100 freestyle, erasing her previous record of 54.68 with a 53.63.
Ania holds four school records and six WMA pool records.
Quotes
Ania regarding her performance in the 50 free: "It was a tough meet going in. A lot of us were sick and we didn't have a full roster so we were worried about that. I was feeling tired and run-down. The week was tough with training. I didn't have high hopes for the meet, but I'm glad I did well."
Ania regarding her performance in the 100 free: "That was a lot better than I thought I'd do. I was real happy with that. I been working on distance work, and going to sprinting can be tough. Mr. Moran let me pick my events, I chose the 100 and it worked out."
Coach Dan Moran regarding Ania's two pool records: "We've been focusing on building a base. It's been distance, but some speed stuff, too. She developed some hitches the last 2-3 months in her freestyle and we slowed things down over some mid-distance yards and focused on things she could control. I felt she'd swim better than she thought she could, but I didn't expect her to be close to her best times or breaking school records. It was a nice surprise for everybody."
