What better place to grow the game of lacrosse than at a place where people don't even know the sport exists?
The Wilbraham & Monson Academy Boys' Lacrosse team gave a free clinic to students in Grades 3-5 at the Brookings Elementary School in Springfield Oct. 25.
The event was organized by WMA Coach Mike MacDonald and Ms. Liane Kendall, a teacher at Brookings whose son, John '19, is a member of the Academy's lacrosse team. The clinic drew 28 students.
QUOTES
Coach MacDonald regarding the clinic: "Part of this is getting a stick in these kids' hands and exposing them to the game of lacrosse a little bit, learn some fundamentals and grow the game a little bit."
Coach MacDonald on the Titans' experience at the clinic: "For the boys, it was getting them out of their element. Getting them to a school in Springfield, especially at the elementary level, was good for them to experience because they need that – more life skills than lacrosse skills."
Coach MacDonald on what's next: "It was a great experience for me as a coach and for the boys. We're hoping in the spring we can get them to a game and give them a youth clinic on the turf."
Ms. Kendall regarding the clinic: "It was the first time these kids had ever held a lacrosse stick. They loved it! The smiles on their faces were priceless. The WMA boys and Coach Mac did an awesome job. When the clinic ended, one boy left the gym, threw his arms up into the air and yelled, "I love lacrosse!"
