Coming off Wilbraham & Monson Academy's Winter Long Weekend and a hard week of swim practice, Wenjun "Happy" Chang '18 didn't think he was in position to set a pool record.
Happy was right, he didn't set a pool record – he set two.
In the final home meet of his brilliant career, Happy established pool marks in the 100 and 200 freestyle events Feb. 10 against Canterbury School.
"I didn't expect to break a record after long weekend, so that was good," Happy said. "Before the long weekend I thought I could get those records, but after long weekend I wasn't sure."
Happy swam the 200 free in one minute, 51.68 seconds before going 49.50 in the 100.
"When I first got here, Nathan Lee '10, who previously held the 100 free record, was a junior, and when Nate graduated I remember thinking we were never going to have somebody that talented again," Coach Dan Moran recalled. "And then Happy showed up, and he's been wonderful."
Incredibly wonderful, with Happy setting school records in the 200 individual medley, 100 Butterfly and 100 Breaststroke, along with the 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and 400 free relay.
Happy was grateful for the opportunity to swim the 100 and 200 freestyles against Canterbury.
"I did the 100 free and 200 because I probably won't do them at the championships," he said.
