The Wilbraham & Monson Academy Riflery team set a school record Jan. 27, posting a score of 963 (out of 1,000) in its match versus Avon Old Farms.
The Titans won the match 963-943, topping the previous mark of 959, set last season during WMA's historic run.
"This will help the team with their confidence moving forward," Coach Bill Passy said. "I've been telling them to believe in themselves, and this will help them realize they are capable of accomplishing great things if they work hard."
The new standard came unexpectedly, as WMA was without one of its best shooters and the team had a lackluster practice the previous day.
"We had a sloppy practice on Friday so I was a little concerned going into the match, especially since we were without one of our top shooters," Coach Passy admitted.
Dan Wesson '18, who has been accepted to attend Wofford College, which sports a Division I riflery program, continued his outstanding season with a 197 (of 200). The record, though, came largely from the performances of the next four shooters, who all set or tied personal records.
Ben Bicknell '18 (193) and Pin Hsin "Irene" Fang '18 (189) both finished with all-time best scores, while Nick Spellman '19 (193) and Michael Carson '18 (191) matched their previous bests to round out the top five scorers for WMA.
"I think we did exceptionally well," Dan said. "We didn't have Erika (Convery '19 because of Model UN), which hurt because she's one of our top shooters and she really contributes to the team. Some people stepped up and that's a real strength of the team this year. A lot of people are coming into their prime."
WMA stayed undefeated at 4-0. Much like last year, the team continues to improve, with its regimented practice schedule serving as a firm foundation for success.
"Everyone is really focused," Dan said. "People have their goals for the day. We focus on each shot. Even though it's practice we act as though it's a match. We treat everything like it's a match and we try to improve every day. Our goal this season is to go undefeated again and to try to go for another championship."
